Project Description

The LEED Gold rated Vancouver Community Library is a new, four-story, 75,000 sf structure located at the Riverwest development site in Vancouver, Washington. It’s comprised of two basic components: a post-tensioned concrete Main Structure and a steel framed Atrium. Embracing the spirit of change and a fluid learning environment, the floors are designed with a minimal amount of “fixed” elements. Structural bays (columns) are based on modular shelving layouts and spaced as far apart as possible to create flexible open areas that can be reorganized or subdivided over time. A nearly 240-foot-long, 50-foot-tall atrium terminates at a rooftop patio consisting of pavers, planters, and a green roof providing views to the Columbia River and Mount Hood. The striking centerpiece of the atrium is a sculptural, cantilevered, cast-in-place concrete stairway seemingly suspended in midair.
